Last week, my cousin with severe autism was left in a car unattended, he then left the car, and the staff notified the police three hours later. He was found the next day, dehydrated and unconscious and was hospitalized. This week my brother Stuart with autism who lives in a group home in Brooklyn told my mother he left the day program alone to take a walk to watch the trains. He said they do no activities there except listening to some talks and packaging breads on Thursdays. If someone works in an industry with inventory they have to account for all the items. I guess we don't have to account for people with disabilities. I am grateful that at least my brother Matty and daughter at the Judge Rotenberg Center where staff are held accountable and I can rest assured they will not be left unattended, maybe even left to die.
